Annual Meeting: The Perils of Westport Whaling Voyages

Date: October 20, 2016
Time: 6:30 pm  to  8:00 pm

6.30 PM Thursday October 20 at the Westport Grange, 931 Main Road, Westport

Whaling was a dangerous business. The book (and recent movie) In the Heart of the Sea depicts the ordeal of a Nantucket whaling crew whose ship is destroyed by a whale. Our Westport ships also had their share of harrowing adventures, from splintered whaleboats – to shipwrecks on remote islands – to vessels that simply never returned. Some of the crew of the bark Janet even resorted to cannibalism to stay alive. Westport Historical Society President Tony Connors will explore these stories, from the humorous to the macabre, highlighting the precarious and perilous life faced by all Westport whalemen. Suggested donation $5.
