A History of Westport Woods and Kirby House

Learn from research-in-progress by Valerie Bassett and others about the history of the Kirby House and Westport Woods Conservation Park, now a Westport Land Conservation Trust (WLCT) property. Traditionally Wampanoag land, English colonists included this as part of the Dartmouth Purchase. From the early settlers, the Tabers who lent their name to the neighborhood known as Taber’s Mills (now Adamsville) to the Fall River Diocese, the current 80-acre property has plenty of stories to tell, including the mystery of when the house — listed on the Massachusetts Register of Historic Places and newly renovated and occupied by the WLCT—was actually built.
