Pauline Avis Nelson
1824 Main Road, Westport Pt.
She served in the coast guard in WW2, trained at boot camp in Manhattan Beach training school, training for SPARS US Coast Guard. She became a yeoman, doing secretarial work at Lake Ponchatrain, Louisiana.
Pauline was honorably discharged in May 1946. She worked at Continental Screw Co where she met Lawrence Woodman Bennett. They were married Sept 1951, bought Pauline’s mothers property at 1824 Main Road, Westport Pt.
All three Nelson children served during WW2. Her older brother Charles E. Nelson served in the US Army Motor Pool servicing jeeps in London. Her younger brother Ralph Nelson, US Army was a radio operator in the Galapagos Islands. Pauline was an especially fast typist. She was also adept at shorthand. She had gone to the Katherine Gibbs secretarial school in Providence and her skills served her well in the coast guard.
